2006 Associate Industry of the Year
The PFMA Scanning Certification Program was founded in 1991 as a voluntary price accuracy program that seeks to provide accurate pricing, appropriate and uniform pricing information and procedures for retailers throughout Pennsylvania and our neighboring states. The PFMA, which represents food retailers of all sizes, recognized this need and brought together individuals from various interested parties to address the issue of pricing accuracy.
From very humble beginnings, the program has grown to where it is today with almost 1300 supermarkets and convenience stores in 7 states enrolled in the program. Not only does the program continue to grow, the enclosed charts will indicate the positive effect the program has had on retail pricing. The Scanning Certification Program is an approved Act # 155 private certification program. The program’s field inspectors are registered with and certified by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
For participating supermarkets, their 1991 accuracy rate was around 96%. In the 2005 fiscal report that rate had improved to slightly over 99%. Convenience stores have experienced a similar improvement with a 1999 accuracy rate of 95% that has now improved to over 97%. Similarly, the error rate for overcharges and undercharges has continued to narrow as the program has grown.
What is significant and bears serious recognition is the data analysis that takes place in this program. Very detailed records are maintained for all inspection activities and results and these records are invaluable in determining where critical resources are to be directed.
The program is managed by Ms. Autumn Thomas and the 12 member board of advisors. PAWM is proud to have selected this most deserving program for recognition.
